UNDERSTANDING ATEX
Explosive Atmosphere Zones
ATEX zones classify areas based on the frequency and duration of explosive atmospheres. Understanding these zones is critical for selecting the right equipment.
Zone 0
Zone 0
HIGHEST RISK
Explosive atmosphere present continuously or for long periods
Example: Inside tanks, vessels containing flammable liquids
Zone 1
Zone 1
HIGH RISK
Explosive atmosphere likely to occur in normal operation
Example: Areas near Zone 0, around pump seals and connections
Zone 2
Zone 2
Medium Risk
Explosive atmosphere unlikely, or only for short periods
Example: Areas surrounding Zone 1, storage areas
Note: Similar classifications exist for dust atmospheres (Zone 20, 21, 22). Our devices are certified for both gas and dust hazardous areas.
